「〜本」、「〜個」の英訳については、これまでも度々困ったことがありました。「ロッドが2本配置されている」「ディスプレイが2つ接続されている」などの日本語の英訳は、「2本のロッドが配置されている」「2つのディスプレイが接続されている」と言い換えて訳せばよいので、結局は解決してきました。

「〜本」「〜個」に該当する英訳がなく、必ず名詞とセットで"two rods", “two displays"と英語ではいう必要があります。

しかし名詞とセットではなく、「本数」「個数」と表現する英語がなく、仕事で困ったことがあります。

図面の中に「半導体用プローブ」の絵が書いてあり、これが2本あるという意味で「2本」ということばのみが記載されています。これを英訳するにはどうしたらよいでしょうか。日本語では「2本」と一言で言えるのですが、英語では「本」に該当することばがないため、単に「2」と英訳するのか、それとも「2本の半導体用プローブ」と英訳するのか、という問題です。図面のスペースが狭く、"two probes for semiconductors"と書ききれないことがあります。もっと長い名詞だったらどうでしょう。つまり日本語では単に「2本」といえるところが、英語では"two probes for semiconductors"と名詞を付けなければなりません。

ここで気づいたのは、日本語には「~本」「~個」という便利な表現があるということです。「本数」を英訳するにしても、"the number of probes for semiconductors"のように、名詞を付けなければなりません。

日本語は英語より難しいといわれつつも、翻訳をやっていると、日本語には完結で便利な表現がたくさんあることに気付かされます。

I have been annoyed by the English translation of 「~本」 and「~個」 in Japanese frequently. The Japanese sentence 「ロッドが2本配置されている」can be translated as “Two rods are displayed", and 「ディスプレイが2つ接続されている」 can be translated into “Two displays are connected". By rephrasing 「ロッドが2本」into “two rods" and “ディスプレイが2つ」 into “two displays", we can ultimately solve the problem.
There are no English words corresponding to「~本」 and 「~個」 in Japanese, and in English a number always has to be expressed with the noun it modifies, such as in the phrase "two rods" or “two displays".
I was, however, annoyed by how to express 「~本」and 「~個」because in English there is no explicit way to express object or noun amount without directly naming said noun or object, unlike Japanese.
Take for example a figure where “probes for semiconductors" is illustrated. The number “two" may be written out, to represent two semiconductor probes. How then can I translate 「2本」into English ?
In Japanese, the word「2本」can be used, but there is no English word corresponding to 「本」, so is 「2本」 translated as “2" or “two probes for semiconductors" ?
A drawing may have enough space for writing out "two probes for semiconductors" but how can we translate longer nouns?
We can simply express 「2本」in Japanese while in English we have to express "two probes for semiconductors" (along with the nouns).
I realized that「~本」,「~個」 are convenient Japanese expressions. If we translate「本数」 from Japanese into English, we have to combine this word with other nouns to make a sentence like this one: "the number of probes for semiconductors".
Although Japanese is said to be difficult, translating makes me realize that there are many simple and convenient expressions in Japanese.
