IJETとは、JAT(日本翻訳者協会)が開催する翻訳のお祭りです。多くのスピーカー(ほとんどが翻訳者)がセッションを行います。

ワードマクロの権威である新田順也氏、
「あの手この手の特許翻訳」の著者、杉山範雄氏、
そして私、奥田百子もスピーカーに名を連ねることができました。翻訳に必要な検索について語ります。

IJETは文芸翻訳から技術翻訳まで幅広い分野にわたる世界中の翻訳者が参加します。今回のフォーラムのテーマは、
「“Rethinking the role of human linguists“(言葉に命を吹き込む)」です。

“human linguists"に「human」という単語があえて入っているのは、AI(人工知能)を意識しているのでしょう。
「命を吹き込む」ということばもAIを意識していると予想します。AIが翻訳する日が到来しても、そこに人間が命を吹き込んで、人間らしいことばに変えていく翻訳者の存在は重要であるというメッセージと思われます。
特許明細書もAIが書く日が到来するかもしれません。それでも完全にAIにとって代われることはなく、ことばをアレンジする弁理士の存在は必要であると楽観しています。
今回のIJETでは、AIのスピーチも行われるようですが、私もスピーカーの一人として、人間としての翻訳者の存在の必要性を訴えるIJETにしたいと思います。翻訳業界は今、過渡期にあるからです。

IJET is a so-called translation festival held by JAT (Japan Association of Translators), in which many speakers (most of whom are translators) will give presentations.

Among those giving speeches is Mr. Junya Nitta, an authority on the macro-functions of MS Word, and Mr. Norio Sugiyama, author of “Various Methods for Patent Translation". I myself have also been listed among the presenters, and I will lecture on how to search for terms necessary in translation.

Japanese and international translators from various fields such as literature, patenting, and technical translation will participate in IJET.
The theme of this forum is:
“Rethinking the role of human linguists" (the Japanese theme is “Breathing life into words")

The word “human" was intentionally inserted into the theme, which appears to emphasize the necessity of humans over AI (Artificial Intelligence).
I think the phrase “breathing life" also relates to AI. Even if AI translation becomes the standard practice in the future, human translators will have to breathe life into AI translation and convert it into human language. This theme seems to convey such a message.
Patent specifications may be described by AI in the future. Nevertheless, AI will not be able to replace humans completely, and I expect that patent attorneys who can arrange key words and phrases will be essential.
This year at IJET, there will probably be speeches about AI. During this period of transition in the translation industry, I want to appeal to the necessity of human translators, not only as one of the presenters, but also as a fellow human.
