「調査」「検索」ということばがあります。特許業界ではほぼ同様の意味で使われています。「特許検索」という場合、何をおもいうかべるでしょうか。
特許翻訳者にとって「検索」は訳語の検索のみをさす場合が多いでしょう。
しかし弁理士や発明者など特許実務を行う者にとっては、先行特許の検索を意味します。
翻訳業界と特許業界の双方に身を置いている私としては、「検索」という場合、
「調査」は先行特許を探すこと
「検索」は訳語を探すこと
というようにことばを使い分けています。
しかし日本語ではこのように使い分けられるのですが、英語では「調査」「検索」ともにsearchといいます。
検索と調査が一つの文書中に出てきた場合、これを翻訳するとなると困ったことが起こります。どちらも訳語がsearchだからです。
そこで、先行特許の調査をinvestigation, research
訳語の検索をsearch
と訳しています。
便利なことに、先行特許の調査も訳語の検索も日本特許庁を含め諸外国特許庁のウエブサイトで無料で行うことができます。

The Japanese words chosa and kensaku (which both mean “search") are ordinarily used with the same meaning in the patent practice. What comes to mind when you hear the word “patent search (kensaku)"?
The word kensaku often reminds patent translators of searches for translated words; however, this word reminds patent attorneys and inventors of searches for prior art.
I belong to both the translation industry and the patent industry and define the words with the following two meanings:
Chosa means searching for prior patents;
Kensaku means searching for translated words.
Although such words can be used separately in Japanese, both chosa and kensaku are translated as “search" in English. Accordingly, if the Japanese words kensaku and chosa appear in one document, it would be troublesome to translate them separately because both are translated as “search".
I use the English words “investigation" or “research" for prior patent searches and “search" for translated words.

Conveniently, investigations or researches for prior patents and searches for translated words can be conducted at the JPO's and other countries' websites. I gave a presentation about this at I-Jet29 (Osaka) (JAT) and will inform you in detail in the next blog.
