前回、「調査」と「検索」の訳語について話しました。
「検索」はsearchのほか、retrieveと訳すことができます。
retrieveには「回収する」のほか「検索する」という意味があります。
これにより、
特許調査 patent search
特許検索 patent retrieval
と訳すことができます。
英語を学習するといつも気づくのは、一つの英単語には複数の意味があるということです。たとえば
searchには、探す、調査する、研究する
studyには、勉強する、検討する、研究する
など複数の意味があります。
日本語では、「調査」のことばは「調査」、「検索する」は「検索する」のみ意味します。
一つの英単語に複数の意味があり、これを覚え、個々の場面でどの意味を採用するかを判断する必要があること、これが翻訳や英語学習を難しくしていると思います。
“retrieve”も「検索する」と訳すべきところ、「回収する」と訳してしまうと、全く違う意味になってしまいます。しかし、
“retrieve information”
は「情報を取り戻す」「情報を検索する」のいずれにも訳すことができます。
これが翻訳の難しさです。

In my last blog, I talked about translations of the Japanese words chosa and kensaku.
The word kensaku can be also translated as “retrieve”, which has the meaning of “collect”.
Thus, the Japanese phrase tokkyo chosa is translated as “patent search”, and tokkyo kensaku is translated as “patent retrieval”.
One thing I am always reminded of when studying English is that one English word has several meanings. For example,
“search” means “seek”, “investigate”, “research”, etc. and
“study” means “learn”, “review”, “research”, etc.
In Japanese, the word chosa only means “search”, and kensaku suru means only “to retrieve”.
In every case, we must learn several meanings of one English word, and select the appropriate one from those meanings. This makes translation and studying English more difficult.
If “to retrieve”, which should be translated as kensaku suru, is translated as kaishu suru, this word will not make any sense.
On the other hand, “retrieve information” can be translated to both joho wo torimodosu and joho wo kaishu suru in Japanese. This is what makes translation difficult.
