翻訳コラム

前回のブログでは、「Post Editing」という仕事が翻訳にはあり、機械翻訳の増加によりこれが普通の翻訳者に依頼されているという話をしました。
翻訳には類似の仕事として、「Proofreading」という仕事もあります。
この2つは名前は異なりますが、現在ではほぼ同じ仕事として扱われています。
私が働いていた翻訳会社では、これらの仕事は異なる部署で扱われていました。
最近ではこの2つが翻訳者に依頼されます。つまり機械が行った翻訳成果物を人間が「post editing」や「proofreading」を行います。
さらに新しい傾向として、完全に人間が翻訳する場面が減り、機械が翻訳できなかった部分のみ人間の翻訳者が翻訳します。
機械翻訳が全翻訳案件の多くを占めるようになり、人間の翻訳者が登場する場面が減っています。
私の同業者も最近の翻訳業界の変化には戸惑いを見せています。
そんな折、今年もATA(American Translators Association)のAnnual Conferenceが開催されます。

です。世界中から1600人の翻訳者、通訳者が集まるといわれており、私も参加することとしました。
世界中の翻訳者と話をするチャンスです。現在の翻訳業界の現状、問題点を皆さんがどう考えているのか、思い切り話を聞いて来ようと思います。

In my previous blog, I talked about how more “post editing” jobs have been entrusted to translators due to an increase in machine translation.
“Proofreading” for translation can also be listed as a similar job.
These two kinds of jobs appear to be different only in terms of their names; but actually, a translation agency I worked for handles these jobs in different divisions.
That being said, these days these two jobs are regarded as almost the same—namely, products translated by machines or humans are subjected to post editing and proofreading by humans.
As a further new trend, the chances of having something translated completely by humans have decreased, and only those parts that cannot not be translated by machines are entrusted to human translators.
This means that machine translation has occupied most of the translations in the industry, while scenarios in which human translators appear are decreasing.
My colleagues feel embarrassed by these recent rapid changes in the translation industry. I wonder if our work might shift to that of filling in the void left by machine translation?
In such circumstances, the annual conference of the American Translators Association (ATA) will be held this year as usual.
It will be held in New Orleans from October 24 to 27. About 1,600 translators and interpreters will participate, and I will also join to have the chance to talk with overseas translators about the present status and problems of the translation industry.
