「100日後に死ぬワニ」という商標が今年1月に出願(2020-4507号)されていました。
ご存じのように大人気漫画のタイトルです。
菊地祐紀氏(作者)と、(株)ベイシカ(キャラクターグッズ企画などの会社)の共同出願です。

ゲームプログラム、電子出版物、携帯情報端末、キーホルダー、時計、書籍、雑誌、かばん、クッション、水筒、洋服、菓子、インターネットによる広告
などに商標出願されています(これは出願で指定された商品・サービスのほんの一部です)。

書籍のタイトルは内容表示になるため、書籍や電子出版物については商標登録は難しいですが、その他の商品やサービスについては商品化するときのことを考えて商標登録しておくことは必要です。
有名なことばに便乗する商品が出現することは業界ではよく起こりえることだからです。
この出願は作者と関係会社の共同出願であり、第三者による出願でなくて大変安心しました。

この「100日後に死ぬワニ」という漫画、読んでいてふと悲しくなりました。

ワニが平凡な毎日を生き抜く姿、やさしさ、そして・・・100日目に死んでしまったであろうと連想させる絵。各回は短いので、あと少し読みたいなというところで一日が終わります。この物足りなさが受けいれられるのでしょう。

A trademark application for “An Alligator Who Will Die in 100 Days” was filed this January (Japanese Trademark Application No. 2020-4507).
As you may know, this is the title of a very popular cartoon. The trademark application was filed jointly by Yuuki Kikuchi (a cartoonist) and BaSICA Inc. (a company engaged in planning character goods, etc.). Game programs, electronic publications, personal digital assistants, key rings, watches, books, magazines, bags, cushions, water bottles, clothing, sweets, advertisements over the Internet, etc., are only some of the goods designated in the application.

It is hard to register a title for a book as a trademark for “books and electronic publications” because it is determined as indicating its contents, however, registering the title for other goods and services is necessary in preparation for its commercialization. Free-riding on a famous word may often happen in various industries.
I am relieved to know that this application was filed by the cartoonist and a related company instead of a third party.

I felt sorrow when reading the cartoon An Alligator Who Will Die in 100 Days.

The cartoon shows appearances of the alligator living his ordinary life, his kindness, and ... drawings which associate us with his death. Every day the cartoon is short and ends just as we feel like reading more, and this is what appears to be widely accepted.
